Influences in Graphic Design and Art

Who inspires you?

I am inspired by...
  • Artist: Gustav Klimt, Van Gogh, Amedeo Modigliani, Frida Kahlo, Lisa Yuskavage, Mark Ryden, Tara McPherson, Takashi Murakami
  • Designers: Jessica Hische, Chip Kidd, Jessica Walsh
  • Fashion Designers: Alexander McQueen, Marc Jacobs, Jill Sanders, Vivienne Westwood,  Tracy Reese, Ted Baker, designers at Liberty of London.
  • Illustrators: Alphonse Mucha, Chiara Bautista, Dave McKean, Fiona Staples, Ruben Toledo

What inspires you?

So much. Color, good design, music, compelling stories, humor.

Where time of day do you find to be the most creative? In class or outside of class?

I have a long commute, so usually in the evening when I am driving home I can let my mind just daydream and run wild. The same for when I am in the shower.

How do you define graphic design?

The difference between being an artist and being a designer is that designers are solving a problem. Designers plan things out with the goal conveying a cohesive, albeit sometimes artistic, message that the masses "get".

Is it still considered Visual communication or is it larger now?

I think it's bigger and almost an umbrella term with many specializations within it.

Contemporary designs that influence and inspire me:

So much, thanks to Pinterest! I'm a big fan of flat design, but I also love pretty, romantic, feminine, dreamy images as well. I love artistic fashion shoots. Every Anthropologie catalog and visual display. Here are some pictures. It's not even the tip of the iceberg. Feel free to explore my Pinterest page; I've been at it awhile.
